Personal style is a broad topic. It encompasses self-expression, experimentation, body positivity, and inspiration, among others.
I’m keenly aware of the concept but since I live in a small town with limited fashion resources, I never thought of looking into developing my personal style. I’m not that big into fashion, anyway, and I already know how to dress myself comfortably and appropriately.

About Karla Welsh
Karla Welsh is an LA-based celebrity stylist and creative director known for her distinctive and transformative approach to fashion. She’s worked with some of the most iconic personalities in the entertainment industry, including Justin Beiber, Olivia Wilde, and Tracee Ellis Ross.
Her inventive looks almost always land on the “best-dressed” lists, and her fashion brand, x karla, has collaborated with brands such as Hanes, Levis, and Dockers.
Karla’s ability to transform fashion into a narrative, where each piece contributes to the overall story, makes her a sought-after stylist for celebrities. If you want to make a statement on the red carpet, no one does it better than Karla.
Beyond dressing superstars, Karla Welsh is an avid supporter of various social causes, some of which include LGBTQ+ rights, menstrual equity (i.e., the right to safe and affordable menstruation products), and gun control and safety.
In 2020, Karla Welsh, alongside creative director Sasha Markova, founded the Period Company.
The brand aims to provide accessible, high-quality menstrual underwear for individuals of all genders. High-waist briefs and bikinis are only $9, while boxer shorts start at $14. They’re comfortable and rewashable, lasting upwards of five to 10 years.
Considering the average woman spends approximately $260 a year ($20 per cycle across 13 cycles) on disposable pads and tampons, Karla’s affordable and sustainable approach to period products is a game-changer. It not only addresses the financial burden of menstrual care but also contributes to a significant reduction in environmental waste.
All in all, Karla’s influence goes beyond the glitz and glamor of Hollywood; she embodies inclusivity, body positivity, and sustainability in and out of the fashion world.

In the MasterClass, Karla offers practical, actionable advice on how to organize, accessorize, and style various pieces to create various looks.
Karla doesn’t impose a rigid set of rules or dictate what’s “in” or “out” each season. Instead, she teaches you the importance of finding what you like, what you feel good about, and what suits you as an individual. I found that helpful and liberating.
For those looking to make it big in the styling industry, Karla shares tips like building a strong work ethic to gain respect and becoming an assistant to an established stylist.
She also goes into detail about how she used her experience to build purpose-driven businesses and give back to the community through the Period Company, Wishi app, and X Karla.

Lesson summary
Karla Welch starts the MasterClass by introducing who she is, her work, and the main ideas from her lessons. She discusses how fashion can reflect a person’s life narrative and the power of what you wear.
In “Becoming a Fashion Stylist,” Karla shares insights and advice on navigating the competitive and ever-evolving world of fashion styling.
This lesson is especially valuable for aspiring fashion designers and stylists. Karla offers an insider look into her styling process, from working with a new client to making a statement on the red carpet.
In her MasterClass, Karla asks us to think of our personal style as a storytelling tool—one that allows us to share who we are with strangers in a quick glance.
She tells us to compile a mood board using magazines, Pinterest, or Milanote and write the common theme among the images to pinpoint our personal style.
The lesson I found most helpful was on creating a capsule wardrobe. Instead of filling out closets with random pieces of clothing, she recommends compiling a capsule wardrobe of eight to 10 items that can easily be styled together for different occasions.

Key Things I Learned
Karla Welch is an amazing teacher. She’s warm, articulate, and a professional presenter overall. She’s got an excellent creative eye and managed to distill a lot of points in an hour-long course.
Below are a few key learnings that stood out during the MasterClass:
- Finding your personal style isn’t as difficult as you may think. It’s something you learn and refine over time. It’s not an instant process but rather a journey of self-discovery.
- Rather than pressuring yourself to meet trends, set your own rules. Settle for what works best for yourself, not what society expects of you. Among these rules is making sure what you’re wearing is comfortable and aligns with your personal preferences.
- Overthinking hinders spontaneity. Trust your instincts and make choices that feel right in the moment to create an authentic wardrobe.
- Don’t be afraid to experiment with different styles, colors, and designs. Step outside your comfort zone to truly discover what resonates with you.
Things I liked about Karla Welch’s MasterClass
Karla Welch is a lovely presenter. She’s full of life and personality, and isn’t shy about how great her skills are. She brings a genuine enthusiasm to the class, openly sharing her passion for fashion and personal style. It makes the class all the more engaging and motivating.
Karla’s lessons are clear and easy to follow. With every concept she introduces, she backs it up with examples and real-life case studies. Her willingness to share behind-the-scenes glimpses of her experiences adds a personal touch to the class.
Sidenote: Keep a notebook and pen handy while watching the MasterClass. Jot down tips and tricks you find most helpful, and look back on them when curating a wardrobe.
What I love most about Karla’s course is that it applies to everyone. I’m not a big fashionista and I rarely keep up with the latest trends, so I was worried that the class is more aimed toward those who are well-versed in the fashion world. However, that wasn’t the case.
The class is presented in a way that’s approachable and free from technical jargon, making it accessible to a broad audience.
Karla also emphasizes the importance of personal preferences over societal expectations, so I felt no pressure to conform to any particular fashion norm after the course.
My favorite quotes from Karla Welch’s MasterClass
“I believe in the power clothing gives you to feel great about yourself. Even if you say you don’t care, you have that one outfit you put on, and it gives you spark. That’s the spark you give to the world.”
“Whether it’s the first impression at a job interview, making a talk, being here today, talking to all of you, there is power in how you make the choices of what you want to show the world. Clothes can tell yourself that you’re worth it, that you are worthy of feeling like your best self.”
“A great way to discover your own style and start your own style journey is to clean out your closet and organize it, so dressing becomes easier. If you have your closet lined up in a very organized system, it’s going to happen much easier for you.
“Creating a wardrobe does not have to be expensive. It is not just for celebrities. It’s for everybody at home. You can create a wardrobe on any budget.”
Things I didn’t like about the Karla Welch MasterClass
There aren’t a lot of things I disliked about Karla’s MasterClass. It’s well-presented, high-quality, and offers lots of actionable tips and strategies.
If I had to nitpick, I’d say the only thing that could use improvement is that she could’ve gone more in-depth about the science behind what you wear, color theory, and mixing and matching different articles of clothing.
She briefly touches on these subjects and gives you a general idea of the concepts, but doesn’t go into detail. If you want to know more about these topics, you’ll have to conduct your own research.
Does the class keep its promises?
Yes, it certainly does! Karla not only taught me how to curate a wardrobe of essentials but also gave me that extra bit of push I needed to break away from conventional fashion norms and express my individuality without fear.
